A Palestinian family in Nablus welcomed a newborn baby under heartbreaking circumstances after the child’s father, 26-year-old Nayef Samaro, was killed by Israeli forces just one day earlier during a raid in the occupied West Bank. Samaro was shot during an Israeli military operation in the city on Sunday and was taken to the hospital where his wife was in labour at the time.
According to Palestinian medical officials, four other people were also wounded in the raid, including a 12-year-old boy who was shot in the shoulder. The Israeli military said the operation followed confrontations in which Palestinians allegedly threw stones at soldiers, and claimed troops responded with live fire after identifying what they described as threats. The raid took place in a densely populated area during school dismissal, raising further concerns about civilian safety.
The family’s grief was compounded by the timing of the birth, as relatives mourned Samaro’s death while also preparing to welcome his child into the world. The newborn’s arrival has been described as a moment of both sorrow and resilience, symbolising the reality many Palestinian families face under continued military raids and violence in the West Bank.
The incident reflects the broader escalation across the occupied West Bank, where violence has continued to intensify amid frequent Israeli raids, settler attacks, and growing displacement. Human rights groups and UN observers have warned of worsening humanitarian conditions, with dozens of Palestinians killed in the territory since the start of the year.
