Al Jazeera Reportedly Ends Contracts of Over 20 Gazan Journalists After Years of Genocide Coverage

'We escaped death dozens of times. We didn't know this would be the end of such a difficult journey,' one of the journalists wrote. Gaza reporters have carried the burden of documenting the war after Israel barred foreign journalists from independently entering the Strip post-October 2023

The move has affected many freelance and contract staff who played a central role in the network's coverage of Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Gazan journalist Mahmoud Shalha said he received a 15 second call in which he was told his contract would be terminated. In a video shared on his instagram, he said the move came despite years of service and significant personal sacrifices.

Al Jazeera has not publicly detailed the reasons for the reported layoffs.
