Gaza Imam and Radio Journalist Killed While Preparing Quran Report

Palestinian journalist, radio presenter and imam Mohammed Abdul Aziz al-Najjar, 38, was killed by an Israeli drone strike in southern Gaza while preparing a report on Quran memorisation, according to the Palestine Chronicle and Palestinian officials.

Al-Najjar worked as a presenter and producer for Holy Quran Radio, affiliated with Gaza’s Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, and was also the imam of Ibad al-Rahman Mosque in Khuza’a, east of Khan Yunis. The ministry's media director said the drone targeted him while he was carrying out his work producing media material about Quran memorisation.

His killing was reported by Gaza's Government Media Office as bringing the number of Palestinian journalists killed since October 2023 to 263. The office accused Israel of systematically targeting journalists and called on international press organisations to pursue accountability. These figures and allegations come from Palestinian authorities and have not been independently verified by the Palestine Chronicle.

Al-Najjar was among at least seven Palestinians reportedly killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza on Wednesday, according to the report. Another Palestinian was also injured in the drone strike that killed him.
