October marked one year after Palestinian journalist and content creator Saleh al-Jafarawi was killed in Gaza City, with people around the world remembering the 28-year-old whose videos documented Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza.
Al-Jafarawi was killed on 12 October 2025, just days after the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He had amassed millions of followers through his reporting on the war, documenting destruction, civilian suffering and displacement across Gaza. He had also spoken publicly about receiving threats from Israel because of his work.
On the day he died, al-Jafarawi was reportedly documenting destruction in Gaza City as armed clashes erupted in the Sabra and Tel al-Hawa neighbourhoods. Palestinian sources reported that he was shot while working. He had been reported missing earlier that day, and footage later circulated showing his body wearing a press vest.
His killing came after nearly two years of documenting Israel’s war, during which he experienced displacement and the destruction of his own home. In January 2025, he spoke about living in constant fear and receiving threats connected to his reporting. His death has since become a moment of remembrance for Palestinians and supporters worldwide, highlighting the dangers faced by those documenting events in Gaza, even as a ceasefire was announced.
