UK shuts down unit tracking Israeli violations

The UK government has closed a Foreign Office unit responsible for monitoring breaches of international law by Israel, it announced on April 23. The unit had been tracking Israeli violations and feeding into decisions on arms exports and legal assessments, forming part of a wider monitoring effort that documented tens of thousands of Israeli aggressions since October 2023.

Officials have framed the closure as part of broader budget cuts and restructuring within the Foreign Office. However, the decision also ends support for a major open-source database used by investigators and human rights groups, meaning key evidence could be lost or sidelined.

Shutting down the unit sends a clear political signal: the government is prioritising arms sales over its stated commitment to international law, especially as violations in Gaza and Lebanon continue to mount.

The move has been widely described as contradictory, coming despite repeated public assurances from ministers that the UK remains committed to upholding international humanitarian law.
