The UK government has refused to launch a public inquiry into the influence of pro-Israel groups on British politics, despite a petition surpassing 114,000 signatures—enough to trigger parliamentary consideration.
In its official response, ministers said they ‘do not support a public inquiry’ into pro-Israeli lobbying and have no plans to pursue a broader investigation into foreign influence. Instead, the government pointed to existing transparency measures and ongoing reviews into lobbying and political donations as sufficient oversight.
The petition, launched amid growing public concern over UK policy on Gaza, called for scrutiny of how lobbying networks might shape government decisions and public debate. Garnering over 1114,00 signatues, the scale of support demonstrates significant public demand for greater accountability.
The refusal risks undermining trust, particularly given existing concerns about political donations and links between policymakers and pro-Israel organisations.
