Slovenia's new Prime Minister, Janez Janša, has signalled a sharp break with his predecessor by pledging to freeze or revoke Slovenia's recognition of the State of Palestine and move the country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, two highly controversial moves that would further align Slovenia with the Israeli government's position while distancing it from the broader European consensus.
Janša described the previous government's recognition of Palestine as ‘illegal’ and made reversing it a condition of his coalition agreement.
His administration has also removed the Palestinian flag from the government building and lifted a ban on arms exports and transit involving Israel.
Israeli ministers welcomed the decisions, hailing Janša as a ‘true friend of Israel’ and praising the embassy relocation as being on the ‘right side of history.’ If implemented, Slovenia would become the first EU member state to move its embassy to Jerusalem.
