Irish President Catherine Connolly said she is 'worried' after her sister, Dr. Margaret Connolly, was detained by Israeli forces while sailing with the Global Sumud Flotilla to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The flotilla said Israeli naval forces intercepted several vessels in international waters near Cyprus, detaining multiple activists, including at least six Irish citizens. The boats were carrying food, baby formula and medical supplies for Gaza.
While speaking with reporters after a meeting with King Charles in London yesterday (May 19), Connolly said: I'm very proud of my sister but I'm worried about her, adding she was also concerned for the other activists on board.
Before her detention, Dr. Connolly released a video saying she felt 'compelled — as a mother, a doctor, and a human being' to join the mission. Irish Prime Minister Michel Martin condemned the interceptions and called for the detainees' immediate release.
