Jewish Anti-Zionist Suspended from Green Party Over ‘Antisemitism’ Allegations

Tony Greenstein, a Jewish anti-Zionist campaigner, has been suspended by the Green Party of England and Wales over allegations of antisemitism, in a move that has quickly become a flashpoint in the party’s ongoing internal disputes.

Greenstein says he was not informed of the specific nature of the complaint against him, suggesting instead that it may have stemmed from objections raised by local pro-Israel activists.

Reports indicate that external pressure played a role in the decision, with pro-Israel advocacy groups urging the party to act. On 18 April, Greenstein was formally notified that he had been suspended following a vote by the party’s regional council, where 11 members supported the decision and only 1 opposed it.

Responding to the allegations, Greenstein described them as ‘particularly offensive when directed at Jewish anti-Zionists,’ adding that such accusations risk losing their meaning through overuse. He reaffirmed his political stance, saying his anti-Zionism is rooted in his identity as ‘an internationalist, a socialist and an anti-racist.’

Greenstein has long been a prominent figure in pro-Palestine activism. He was a founding member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and a former member of the Labour Party, from which he was expelled in 2018 following similar allegations. More recently, in 2023, he was charged in connection with an alleged action targeting a facility linked to Elbit Systems alongside activists from Palestine Action.
