Italian activists escalate Mediterranean port protests over Gaza genocide

Italian pro-Palestinian activists have intensified efforts to disrupt military supply chains linked to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. A new campaign, called 'Global Intifada Disarm,' was launched at the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, one of the Mediterranean’s largest shipping hubs, combining maritime and land-based protests.

The mobilisation involved grassroots unions, Palestinian youth organizations, and solidarity groups. Demonstrations took place not only at ports but also at logistics centers and factories that activists say are connected to military production or arms shipments. Protesters argue that civilian workers should play a role in blocking the flow of weapons and military equipment.

The campaign builds on a broader wave of pro-Palestinian activism in Italy, where dockworkers and trade unions have increasingly targeted transport infrastructure and commercial links supporting Israel’s military operations. Activists are calling for an arms embargo and an end to Italian involvement in military supply chains to Israel.

Organisers say their goal is to expand these actions across Mediterranean ports and strengthen international cooperation among labor movements and solidarity networks opposing the war in Gaza.
